Ladies European Tour: Caroline Hedwall Eyes Money List Empty Ladies European Tour: Caroline Hedwall Eyes Money List

To compliment the discussion on the LPGA and its slippery slope to ruin, I found this interesting article.

Sweden's Solheim Cup star Caroline Hedwall remains hopeful of becoming the first player since Laura Davies in 1985 to top the European Rolex Rookie of the Year and Henderson Money Lists in the same season as she tees up in China this week.
Hedwall, ranked third on the Henderson Money List behind Ai Miyazato and Melissa Reid, trails Miyazato by €134,284 and needs two victories plus a runner-up finish in her final three events to overtake the Japanese player.

"It's been a fantastic year so far and I'm very satisfied with it. As far as winning the money list goes, it will be very tough to overtake Ai, but if I can it would be a great way to top off the year and it would be a great goal," said Hedwall, ahead of the Suzhou Taihu Ladies Open at Suzhou Taihu International Golf Club.

"I'm only playing this week and two more events in India and Dubai so it's pretty tough and I would have to be top three every tournament I guess. There is a chance but I don't know if it's a realistic goal."

Impressive victories at the Ladies Slovak Open, Finnair Masters and UNIQA Ladies Golf Open in Austria have already assured the 22-year-old of the Rolex Rookie of the Year Award, but if the script holds good, she could be in contention for the 'Player of the Year' title, as well, which is voted for by the LET members.

Even if Miyazato does take the Henderson Money List title, Hedwall could earn a 10 year exemption to play on the Ladies European Tour if she can overtake Reid to top the exemption list, an internal document from which players who have not competed in six events throughout the year are removed and which determines playing categories for the following season.

At present Hedwall is entered into the final three events while Reid has chosen to skip the Hero Women's Indian Open and has only entered the Suzhou Taihu Ladies Open and Omega Dubai Ladies Masters.

Reid is €101,101 behind Miyazato and needs a win in Dubai and at least a second place finish this week in China to take the Henderson Money List title.

However, with two months remaining until both races are decided, she has a realistic chance of earning a ten year exemption.

So will she make it?

I think the ladies ET is all about golf and the top players are very competative. The tour takes them all over Europe and further afield, and they have afull calender, unlike the LPGA which only had 23 events this year. The prize money though is down as sponsors drive bargains in the present economic climate.

What a shame the European Tours can't hold such big money tournaments in Europe.
The smash and grab raids by Tours to Asia will ultimately be self-destroying, lines between Tours increasingly blurred.
Time for European sponsors to stand up and be counted.

That means they have to admit to having money, and then the Tax men will take it away.

Surprised there was no mention of Diana Luna as she was just behind Hedwall in the money.

Kwini the blurred lines may well be the answer for both ladies tours. ET has a full callender but short on prize money so needs bigger sponsors. LPGA has an empty callender and few US based top players. Maybe theres a solution to team up for half the events, this would have the effect of having a reduced Asian field, because there will be ET and US based ladies fighting it out for the prizes. The TV stations will be more inclined to tie up for this and bigger sponsors could be interested. There's plenty of ladies over the pond who can't be earning a living at the moment. 23-events this year is poor, but a tie up of some description could work, although it would need to be a proper 50-50 venture and if it worked could be a precursor for a single governing body.

In some respects the mens game may end up down this road as we have the world series etc and Finchem shuffling in the background to do more. The European dominance is starting to get some bad feelings by some on the PGA ....

Survival of the fittest aint going to fly, even if a well run ET ladies oiperation is the dominant partner, the bulk of the generated cash will still come from your side of the pond

Doc,
One of the big problems with the LPGA is that almost half of their tournaments are limited field events, so that rank-and-file players, say the Janice Moodies of this world, scarcely get to play two events in consecutive weeks.
My feeling is that golf Tours and its members prostitute themselves to Asia when it suits them; can't see that continuing as Asia's base becomes broader and they can dispense with freeloaders from Europe and America.
Westwood's "sponsorspeak" that there should be a fifth Major in Asia may not be too far wide of the mark if we allow our imagination to fast-forward a decade or two.

And why shouldnt there be a fifth major in Asia or Australasia for that matter?

Look at tennis - the four slams are 1 x US, 2 x Europe, 1 x Australia

nicely spread around to provide interest to all parts of the world.

Hobo,
And the tennis slams have been that way for, what?, a century??
Leave the golfing Majors as they are or you'll be moving them every time there's an economic boom somewhere.
One of the problems with the Ladies is that they can't make up their minds about what constitutes a Major and then build their calendar around them.

But there certainly should be WGC's spread evenly around the world, no doubt about that.

I simple look at wiki will back up kwini's point

"Seven different events are classified as having been LPGA majors at some time. The number in each season has fluctuated between two and four. The first tournament which is now included in the LPGA's official list of major victories is the 1930 Women's Western Open, although this is a retrospective designation as the LPGA was not founded until 1950.[3]

Women's Western Open: 1930–1967
Titleholders Championship: 1937–42; 1946–66; 1972
U.S. Women's Open: 1950–date
LPGA Championship: 1955–date
du Maurier Classic: 1979–2000
Kraft Nabisco Championship: 1983–date
Women's British Open: 2001-date "
