Fishing
Noticed we haven't got a fishing section.
Any of you chaps care for a spot of fishing now and again?

Re: Fishing
About time for a fishing section in my opinion.
I fish most weeks but more in the winter months

I've always wanted to take it up but just have never got round to it.
As someone who would be going into it totally green what advice would you give?

Re: Fishing
I have a small boat on the Thames, 90% of my fishing is after pike, but will spend the odd evening float flishing bread on the surface. pb 22lb pike 26lb carp, but my favourite is a 15lb crass carp,
For beginners i`d suggest going out with a pal who has experiance, the bigger fish need to be handled with care

Re: Fishing
Your always learning new techniques whether its new baits or rigs , like sherm says if you want to get into fishing go with someone who knows what their doing and learn from them .
My pb's 23lb 5oz carp, but my 2 favourite fish were a near 4lb Perch and a 6lb 3oz Tench .

Re: Fishing
4lb perch is a dream of mine, only managed to just brake the 2lb barrier, ansd that was on a lure almost as big as the fish itself

Re: Fishing
My favourite type of fishing has to be running a stick float down the river. Can't beat it.
Used to do a bit of pike fishing, my personal best is a pretty impressive 27lb 10oz pike caught dead baiting in the winter. Can't imagine I'll ever beat that one!
Carp fishing doesn't appeal to me too much, though I indulge now and again, personal best of about 10lb, which shows that I haven't put any effort into it. Only fish for them on a pole, mind, if I do.
Given that fishing is the single most popular sport in the world, in terms of numbers, I think we should have a bit of a fishing section. If you fellas are in agreement, I will have a think about setting one up.

Re: Fishing
I haven't actually done any dead baiting for years, but just for the record it was a sprat that I caught my pb on. Tell a lie, it was actually two sprats that had frozen together and had yet to melt given that the temperature was damn low. Stuck them both on my trebles and an hour or so later that beast decided to pick them up.
It came in like a dead weight, until it realised it was getting into the shallows and then it had an almighty thrash around. Really impressive fish, and a shock given that my 2nd pb is all of 15 lb or so.
Alright fellas I will set up a section for us later on today.

If we can get round any wumming then a Fishing Thread would be a great place to maybe get advice or pass on knowledge .

Re: Fishing
Good thing about this site is that it isn't moderated by the imbeciles over at the Beeb.
First sign of wumming and it'll be removed, with us able to punish them for doing so. In that case, I think it'll be wum free.

Wow.
Seen you guys talking here now and getting this set up, nice job. My personal best is a 10lb 6oz Rainbow. Had a 1lb 8oz Perch at Loch Awe but nothing near 4lb, that would have been some sight. My mate lost a massive Rainbow last year at last light. Fighting it for about 15 mins, never seen it, the fish had nearly straightened the hook and it came out. Going out on Sunday, maybe course fishing at Livingston.

Good luck, mate, be sure to let us know of any success!
Nice day for it...
Always found that method of carp fishing the most entertaining, watching them glide in toward it, suck it in and just waiting for them to turn with it before striking. They seem to fight more vigorously this way, too.

Re: Fishing
Yeah that can be an issue. Thankfully the carp fisheries I do go to haven't got too many of them about.
I did catch a duck once, though, took a bit of restraining whilst my old man got the hook out of it's gob. Not something I'd want to happen again!

Good luck mate!
I've just organised another river fishing trip to Wales for next weekend. Intend to have another great day catching brown trout and grayling trotting a stick float.

Re: Fishing
Just had a day full of jack pike, must of had over 10 and nothing above 2lb.
Didn't even see anything bigger, but the river looked great....
Been laid low with a bug so not been out all week, anyone else been out catching?

I've also had a bloody bug mate, so my planned river trip had to be postponed.
Good fun catching jacks, though, they're certainly lively! What were you doing, a bit of spinning?

Re: Fishing
Barbel, pound for pound, have to be the strongest of fresh water fish, that first run they make is as exhilarating an experience as you are likely to get when fishing. Superb stuff, and a beautiful fish, too. Pure muscle.
I don't do much carp fishing, and only tend to visit small ponds when I do, so my PB is only around the 10lb mark.
To this day my overall PB stands at 27lb 10oz, a pike which I believe I mentioned earlier in this thread.
