Garmisch - Men's GS - updated

Another day in Garmisch, and more poor visibility so the men's GS course was shortened a little - probably a good call as it got the racing under way relatively early. The course still cut up a bit though, which won't help the late starters for the second run.

Great run by Svindal who is fastest after the first run, but today's times are a lot closer than the women's event yesterday - only 0.05 seconds to Schörghofer in second, with Kostelic third (+0.23) then Ted Ligety (+0.25), Didier Cuche (+0.38, with a broken thumb!) and Carlo Janka (+0.49, also with health issues). Going to be an exciting second run (hopefully) despite the weather. A couple really exciting moments when it looked as though others would break into the top 6 (Bode Miller & Fritz Dopfer for example) but it was a tricky course and they lost speed at critical points; funny that it looked quite flat and non technical when Bruno Kernan did his pre-race run with the helmet camera!!

Run 2: Well done Ted Ligety (USA) - reckon this was the one he wanted, and a great second run gave him a well deserved gold, just 0.08 seconds up on Cyprian Richard (FRA). In the end Schörghofer (AUT) held on for bronze by 0.06 of a second from Svindal, so another medal for Austria which, given the depleted state of their injury hit team, must have been really well received - certainly he and his coach looked ecstatic!

crikey, those French like the second runs of giant slaloms don't they? Yesterday Tessa Worley (from 19th to 3rd), Cyprien Richard today (from 7th to a very close 2nd).
