ExxonMobil Bislett Games, Diamond League, June 9
by lsabre on Tue 07 Jun 2011, 9:15 am
.I think it's about time we got this going as the next leg of the Diamond League series is the famous Bislett Games of Oslo, a meeting overwhelmed and brightly illuminated with monumental performances and world records through the course of time in athletics. As well as a ground overladen with many fond memories from a British point view as it has shaped the set to dazzling world records by Sebastian Coe, Steve Ovett, Steve Cram and David Moorcroft, holding also a proud record of victories over the renowned 'Dream Mile' that stretches even to our days with Andy Baddeley.
'Badders', as a matter of fact, is among the starters again in what traditionally shapes the curtain-drawer of the meeting, save that this feature has been reserved for Usain Bolt over the 200m this time round, in his first high-profile race of the outdoor season. Apart from the 2008 winner of the race, there are also several other Brits on show on Thursday as follows:
Men
200m Christian Malcolm, Danny Talbot
1500m Colin McCourt
Mile Andy Baddeley
110mh Andy Turner
LJ Greg Rutherford, Chris Tomlinson
Women
800m Jenny Meadows
100mh Gemma Bennett
400mh Perri Shakes-Drayton

Despite appearing on the starting-lists, Danny Talbot is going to give the 200m race against Usain Bolt a miss as he is nursing a slight hamstring injury.

I'm looking forward to this; should be a good chance to see some European athletes that we havn't seen so far. Mens steeple chase shouls be a good French vs Kenyan battle, apparently they are aiming at the 8 minute mark!

It's a little funny that in the 800m Nordic Men there is a runner from Qatar, Hamza Driouch, competing!!

Meanwhile, I've picked up that it was pouring in Oslo earlier on which doesn't augur well for real sharp end performances on a possible heavy track where it could be even worse for the jumpers. Let's hope conditions improve substantially before the meeting gets underway.

Perhaps he's in there as a pacemaker? I'm not sure.

A quick look at the IAAF preview of the event about one and a half hour before the Live coverage of the meeting begins:
http://www.iaaf.org/competitions/dlm/news/newsid=60283.html
To be honest, though, the quality of several fields on the schedule today is nowhere near the heights of a golden past where this ground used to shape one of the 'Temples' of the European circuit with literally everyone who was someone would turning up if fit and healthy.
I'm afraid that what with the timing of the meeting and the relentless pace and schedule of the Diamond League series the glow of certain legendary affairs has worn off alarmingly.

Re: ExxonMobil Bislett Games, Diamond League, June 9
As for the British prospects of the evening, I'd tip Greg Rutherford and Perri Shakes-Drayton to edge the men's long jump and the women's 400m hurdles respectively although weather conditions suggest that an attack of the former on his own UK record could be brought to a halt.
Chris Tomlinson got off to a sound opener at the European Club Champs so I would expect him to mix it with the top four while Andy Baddeley looks to me in his best shape since 2008 and could grind out a solid season springboard of a result in the 'Dream Mile'.
Jenny Meadows and Andy Turner are definitely capable of top three placings in the women's 800m and the 110m hurdles respectively, with outside chances to win both, while Colin McCourt falls in a level play 1500m and if he plays his cards right he could come out with double gains - a promising season opener and possibly being named in the vacant slot of the British team at the European Team Champs.

How irritating are Edwards and collins. Bolts 100m runs have not been dissappointing at all. Actually amazing starts to the season. How many other runners have opened up their seasons with those times after not having run for how many months???
Utterly ridiculous commentary. And what is with the countdown to Bolt??? There are other events going on... oh geez... i hate this BBC coverage.

Your not the only one Ryan. Much prefer red button coverage. Unfortuantely the BBC don't listen. What can you do.

You've just got to do your best to ignore it I think!
Just managed to catch the men's hurdles. I've been out of the athletics loop for a while now so didn't realise about Andy Turners' achillies. Great 60m by him, hope he can get the training in to compete well over the full distance.

Nothing changes. People complaining about the BBC coverage.
Just enjoy the events and stop moaning, I say.
Nice win in a 'Bolt-certified' field. I imagine a lot of races are going to have to be 'Bolt-certified' the way he's running this year.

I'm away at present and counting on this site for news (thanks Isabre).
I can imagine how pathetic the BBC coverage is. Dumbing down to the lowest common denominator with 80% chat and 20% action (virtually no field events), with results popping up before pictures etc.

The thing is with the 200m, you are not going to make ripples let alone waves with any times over 20s. So until our British sprinters start running at least 20.1s regularly they're not going to raise many eyebrows.
20.57s is not going to scare anyone, it is a slow speed.
Extract from a recent news interview with Donovan Bailey:
"Donovan Bailey was an out-and-out 100m specialist and only ran two 200m races in his career: one of those races came in the 1997 Bislett Games here, when he won in 20.14sec.
"That is slow!" he beamed at his time, a considerable distance off Bolt's world record of 19.19sec."

It would be amazing to see a British guy around 20 secs again. I'm always inclined to think that we struggle as far fewer of our guys double up in the sprints in a serious way compared to other countries, particularly USA and Jam. Bolt, Blake, Gay, Dix, Gatlin, Mo Greene. Most of our guys just seem to end up concentrating on one event after a brief dalliance with the both short sprints.

Saying that I am looking forward to the domestic competition in the trials for the Mens 200m from the young Danni Talbot up to Malcolm. Any news on Toby Sandeman, Jeff LB & Kieran SD.
On a side note I wonder if some of our younger sprinters should be doing a Mo and looking at training in the states/Jam
Over the years many UK sprinters promise so much around 18, 19 , 20 but don't seem to push on as they tansition to senior level (Michael Johnson once remarked about this very low conversion rate). As said above 20.0 is now the bench mark and 20.2 is what will be needed (given favourable running conditions) to make major finals. Don't forget performances are relative. You can not compare apples and pears e.g. last nights performances against Eugene for example or vice versa
Liked the look of Mokoena. Tomlinson and Rutherford seem to have more a flatter trajectory. Works if you have the speed.

agree with you regarding christian malcolm. 3rd to bolt at bislett seems a pretty good result to me. 20.57? did you see the weather? What medals are at stake in june?
i like malcolm good guy, good attitude, great talent. Did you see the coverage in the national media? Thought not because there was hardly any. Even when the race was shown on TV, bolt was euolgised but malcolm ignored
and don't get me started on the cringeworthy bbc 'presentation'!

I imagine that companies like the bbc arrive at the meeting with a set agenda. Then , rather then merely report the news as it unfolds, they proceed to shape the facts around their own perception of how they should develop.
To be fair to the presenters it's probably not them who organise this, probably some know-nothing wonk at bbc hq called Quentin whose last involvement with running was his prep-school sports day.
