There is so little movement from the midfield I'm not surprised the ball is starting to go long! Say all you like about us having offensive players but the intelligence of them can most certainly be questioned!

Roy Hodgson has prepared the England team really well for this match.  Only being 2-1 down after 30 minutes against Iceland is some achievement.  Although Iceland has a population smaller than the city of Leicester one shouldn't underestimate the effects of Icelandic root vegetables in putting hairs on the chest.

Apart from Sturridge the whole England team have gone missing! Walker has been atrocious...except the penalty Rooney has been innocuous, Sterling has shown exactly why media & fans were correct and Hodgson wrong. The worst thing though is how poor the movement from those without the ball is in the final 3rd.

Hodgson has to roll the dice like he did v Wales.

Get Kane and Sterling off.

Wonder how Lee Dixon - who thought England would win by a few and was more interested in talking about the France game - is feeling?

He rolled the dice because he had too, good managers rarely put themselves into that position let alone twice in a tournament! The man is bang average. For all he has done in terms of getting us playing with the ball more and being more dominant in possession the team have not learnt how to use that possession correct. We are slow and ponderous up top with no tempo or intelligent movement in the final 3rd (that's down to the players as well as management though).

He was fooled into the attacking prowess of the Spurs full backs, completely overlooking their limited defensive abilities.

For all the talk of us stretching the play and using width we have done neither. You have to move the ball a heck of a lot quicker in order to stretch play...and to stretch them out wide you need wingers who will a) beat a man b) not cut back inside every five minutes.

Might as well go to diamond and two up top. Get Sterling off...and Kane. Bring on Vardy...play him and Sturridge up top..Barkley in behind..Alli and Rooney the center pairing and Dier as the holding man. Have Walker and Rose bomb on (no point in them being picked it there not going to do it now)

Rashford, Vardy and Barkley. If this isn't a game for Barkley then don't take him at all.

Squad selection had led us here. Too many players at home who Roy hasn't even given a real chance.

Post by dyrewolfe Mon 27 Jun 2016, 8:56 pm

Well that was just bloody embarrassing. picard

After Sterling won the penalty, England didn't do a single thing of note - other than Kane's volley (the only time the Iceland keeper actually had to stretch to get the ball).

Pedestrian, amateurish, predictable...just simply awful. The worst performance since Brazil 2014.

We can't defend set pieces - or in open play, for that matter. Utterly ineffectual when going forward. Can't take set pieces. The only thing we can do is pass from side to side and keep possession.

I'm not even going to bother watching the second half, as England simply have no clue how to break down defensive sides and Iceland can afford to sit back and defend...probably a scenario that was in neither manager's game plan.

What an utter shambles.

Not blaming Roy entirely - our players are so damn slow and pedestrian. Are they tired or just lazy, or do they not actually give a damn? There is just no urgency - except in short bursts. They dither on the ball so long that any attacking opportunities disappear and in fact they usually end up having to pass backwards when they're closed down.

From now on I am officially a Wales fan.

Wilshere hasn't played all season and Henderson has been injured for two months. It's about the options we have now, not the decisions Roy made before.

Barkley is a game changer who moves with the ball and has creativity in his game. It might not work, but unlocking teams is kind of what you use him for.

Wilshere played once all season and went! Henderson wasn't entirely fit. I don't think Roy concerns himself with players who have played, form players or fit players to be frank LiamB.

I'd just like to say at this time; Noble and Creswell must be sat smug somewhere. Two players who are far more effective than those picked over them. I don't care that neither have played champions league or international football...they have the ability and more importantly would be delirious and pleased as punch and give everything for that England shirt!

The fact Sterling and Kane are still on the bench tells you all you need to know about Roy and his management skills.

Regardless of outcome both Roy and Rooney can does us a favour and retire after these Euro's (that's not a case of me hating on Rooney because as good as he's been during qualifiers he's done nothing of note for 12 years on the big stage)!
