Haye v Briggs - Will it happen? Empty Haye v Briggs - Will it happen?

Post by catchweight Sun 03 Apr 2016, 12:27 pm

Joshua and Fury seem to think this will go ahead. Apparently Briggs has passed MRI / brain scans and Haye isnt setting the bar high in terms of opponents. I havent seen Briggs fight since he took a hiding off Klitschko a few years back but I cant imagine him being any worse than Hayes last opponent who looked like a club fighter (I dont care whatever ranking he held with the WBA).

Suspect it will be dictated by what happens at the weekend. Think Joshua Haye is as good as a done deal. Would think Hearn's big hope is Joshua comes through with ease and is fit for a defence late summer. If he is think that being against Haye is nigh on certain, will shift tickets and will be PPV, ticks all the boxes from sky and Matchroom's perspective.

Briggs could fit in all this, Haye will probably want to sneak a third fight in before Joshua and Briggs will sell through being a clown without actually representing a risk.

Not a lot in there to excite the fans but such is the way of things.

Briggs is a step up from Haye's current opponents......which is utterly tragic!

The fight has no credibility (some might argue it shouldnt even be sanctioned) but I dont think Haye has to do anything other stick around in order to get a shot. Credibility wont really matter.

I think Summer 2017 outdoors in a stadium will be most likely for Haye v Joshua and (assuming Joshu actually bets Martin) we are likely to see them fight duds until then.

If Haye does give Briggs the fight, what will Briggs say at the pre-fight press conference? He won't be able to rely on "LET'S GO CHAMP!" anymore because the "champ" is going to fight...

I think Haye will probably wind up fighting Bruno at this rate. Might as well drag Holy and Tyson out too.

Well before AJ gets to Haye he will have to fight his mandatory if he beats Martin, which will either be Takam or Parker, either will test AJ in my opinion

It's the fight the public wants so Haye will make it happen to please the public. If Briggs fails a brain scan then they can fight under the North Korea board of control. Haye will make this fight happen. He is good like that

Haye vs Briggs must happen. If we all email David I'm sure he'll oblige.

Haye vs Briggs will make money and Haye will lap it up.

I'll watch, I get a weird feeling it might be half decent to be honest, better than watching him face De Mori, do I think Briggs should be fighting? Not really...

Briggs knows he has to go for it early as he's 44 and can punch so expect first few rounds to be exciting, but Haye should take over completely and spark him before the halfway stage.

Seems like they staged an altercation at the weigh in and now it seems as good as signed. Haye has no shame.

I suppose the BBBC just rolls over for a few bucks now that Warren took the pee out of them and won over Luxembourg....

Cabin boys to Hearn, Warren and any other promoter with balls...

"Here is a few pennies now p**s off...."

Briggs shouldn't get a licence...They know it..We know it...Haye probably knows it... But they are servants when they should be the masters..

Disgrace..

Truss is right. Briggs is a guy who was put in intensive care by an ageing Vitali fighting with one knackered knee six years ago. He is unlikely to have improved since then. He has no business being in a boxing ring with any half decent heavyweight. The board should tell him to sod off home, but won't unfortunately.

Briggs would probably be a step up from Hayes last opponent to be fair. Maybe that was Hayes plan. Set the bar so low that a circus fight with Briggs would seem like a step up?

Briggs shouldn't be allowed near a ring. Disgusting Haye is choosing to fight him and more so he'd get licensed.

Shannon Briggs has revealed that a verbal agreement has been reached for him to fight David Haye.

The former world champion will fight on the undercard of the Hayemaker’s next fight at the O2 Arena on May 21 before taking on the former WBA heavyweight king (27-2, 25 KOs) later on this year.

Briggs (59-6-1, 52 KOs), who clashed with Haye at the weigh-in ahead of Anthony Joshua’s IBF world heavyweight title challenge against Charles Martin on Friday, confirmed that a deal has been done for the pair to meet.

“We talked last night [on Thursday and] we just came to a deal,” he exclusively told iFL TV’s Kugan Cassius at the O2 Arena.

“The fight is going to happen, for sure, we have a handshake deal. I spoke with his [Haye’s] lawyer last night [and] finished it up, got a deal done.”

“We shook on it last night,” he continued, “[and] we actually have some contracts, some paperwork, going back and forth, but with that being said, the fight is going to happen for sure, locked in, 100 per cent.

“I’ll knock him out and then I’m coming after [Anthony] Joshua.”

That meeting, however, will happen only after 44-year-old Briggs has dealt with television obligations that lay ahead.

“I’m going nowhere,” Briggs said when asked whether he would be around to watch the confirmed world heavyweight title rematch tussle between Tyson Fury and Wladimir Klitschko, which is set to take place on July 9, exclusively live on BoxNation in the UK, at a venue to be determined in Manchester.

“I’m going to be doing a couple of reality TV shows –– one that’s really big here in the UK –– but I can’t say too much yet, so I’m going to be here for a while.”

Haye admits it a done deal here too.

Lenox Lewis came out and said Hayes opposition aren't helping him prepare for Joshua and I can't see how Briggs is going to help. Stupid fight and hope Briggs doesn't get any long term damage as he is going to ship some punishment.

Truss is right, Briggs should never be let near a boxing ring again and, should he sustain serious injury, he should sue whatever idiot licences him.

In terms of whether the fight will happen, it pieces together nicely and I watched the IFL video of the altercation and thought it didn't look staged and Haye looked more uncomfortable than usual. He's normally the slick one with all the chat - but he had nothing. Which makes me think it wasn't set up and he wasn't prepared.

IF Briggs gets on the undercard and wins ok then I suspect it'll go as another warm-up/profile fight for Haye as he holds out for a summer 2017 stadium showdown with AJ (which I hope he doesn't get unless working himself into mandatory status).

Briggs should never had been allowed to fight Vitali and that was years ago, the beating he received that night took years to recover from.

VERY VERY poor decision from Haye if he thinks a fight with Briggs is any kind of preparation for AJ. Only hope Briggs gets beaten on the Haye undercard and we can kiss all that goodbye. Would rather watch him fight someone like Lucas Browne and I don't rate that lump either.

The biggest shock in all this was Haye being able to convince anybody his comeback would be any different. Since he moved to heavyweight the maxim of maximum reward for minimum risk has ruled, unfortunately it appears it still does.

That said even by Haye's low standards Briggs is shameful. Joshua is little better for facilitating Haye's desire to sell his fans short. They should tell him to stick it, but inevitably won't.

Some places are offering Briggs at 5/1. I thought that was 5/1 to be Hayes next opponent but its 5/1 to actually win the fight!

I believe that the learned sage George W Bush said it best.

“There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again."
