Hi all,

Has anyone experienced the following problem and know what it is and whether it's a permanent problem?

I was leg pressing 320kg and completed 10 reps, I then did a drop set to 180kg and on the last rep i got this intense throbbing pain in the back of my neck on the ridge where the head and neck meet. The pain lasted about an hour and then I had a dull ache for about a week. I searched this online and it seems quite common but there seems to be several reasons why it happens and thus confusion.

Although the ache has gone every so often If I sit still for too long the ache comes back but whilst i'm moving I experience no problem at all.

To be honest with you I leg press 800 pounds for 15 reps and once I've done that I'm wasted....Don't know how you can max out on legs and do a drop set...

Suspect you're not going all in...

I've never had the pain you're talking about because I'm very strict on form..

I imagine you're cheating on the reps and probably the form is all over the place....

My advice is to drop the weight do higher reps and when you can't get anymore up.. put your hands on your kneecaps and cheat two more reps up..works for me...

Drop sets aren't necessary for legs...although you can super set.

Haven't had this problem with leg press so much, but have had something similar with smith machine squats...get a dizzy feeling and a bit of pain at the top of my spine where it meets the neck...is this through having the bar too high up do you think, as opposed to a bit lower down so that it rests more across the upper back?

More to do with the alignment of your body and form....

Make sure your legs are a foot in front of the bar to keep your back straight and your feet are adjacent to eachother..

strict and not so heavy!!

Yeah I generally try and stick to those rules you state Truss, hence why I'm beginning to think it may be where I'm placing the bar on my neck, too high up possibly. I rarely squat though, only just getting into it, so could also be the fact that I'm not too used to it!!

Always used a towel to stop the bar digging in...when it digs in you find yourself moving the neck to ease the pain..

Never quite know how much to train legs...

Haven't trained them much really, but have started to do so recently. 3 sets of 10 on the leg press followed by 3 sets of 10 squats had my legs real sore for the next few days.. Lack of practice? Or could that be sufficient?

Do the squats first.....then the leg press...

Be freshest for the compound movement..

sufficient if the soreness is there.....and your weights are improving

Sound advice there from Trussman66, I'd say that the squat should be your focus.... this excercise promotes all over body development and together with the deadlift are the key power excercises to master...both these excercises engage the whole body and when used with sufficient weight force the body to adjust in the most drastic of ways ie gain most muscle. And use a towel rapped round the bar or a foam protector to ensure the bar doesn't dig into your upper back/traps, shouldn't have the bar resting on your neck...as already suggested.

I'm personally of the school that you only be using the leg press if you've never been in a gym before.

It's a machine for people who aren't strong enough to squat. Once you are the leg press should be left to gather dust.

An 800lbs leg press is one of the most pointless exercises you could waste your time with in the gym....

Dorian Yates never squatted.....Didn't like the exercise because of his knees!!

Won the olympia 6 times in a row..

Dorian Yates was a body builder dosed up to the eyeballs on steroids. Competing in a freakshow contest.

I thought this forum was about weightlifting? Maybe you need to wheel your leg press off to the bodybuilding forum? Do some tricep kick backs and lateral rasies?? Finish on some concentration curls for an awesome pump?

Weightlifting as a sport is a discipline in strength, not hypertrophy. Squats are king, leg press is a useless ego flattering exercise.

It say's weightlifting....Funnily enough to get my 49 inch chest and just under 18 inch arms I've lifted weights..

Which is more than you have if you want to hospitalise people by saying "keep your hips high" when deadlifting..

Coleman, Schwarzenegger, Yates etc all used the leg press..

Don't disrespect people who can lift twice more than you..

and derrrrrrrrr.....Weightlifters don't use drugs do they!!! in the off season..

I'll be honest I think you're full of it kid....In my gym... all the advanced bodybuilders and weightlifters are easy going guys who always try to help others...

No egos because we don't need to big ourselves up or be cocky...

Always find it's wimps or never-do-wells who have the attitude..

Watch most weightlifting competitions they almost always do the exercises wrong...

Arching backs for the Bench press etc...

I was taught a certain way and it has served me well...

Don't disrespect people like Yates who you could never emulate both physique or weights-wise...

If you check back over your posts you'll see I was advising someone on hip position set up for deadlift before you jumped in and started spouting garbage.

You have no clue about biomechanics... I dont need to argue with you because you do a good enough job of making yourself look stupid.

You were taught a certain way. Great. Carry on then.

Had something similar 2 years ago i came on whilst i was doing T-bar,i found it was down to incorrect breathing from going to heavy which brought the strain on,
it lasted for about 6 weeks every time i trained the pain come back in a really sharp way and would hurt from the back of the neck to the temple,

So i had to ease right off and train to a bare minimum i took anti inflammatory tabs pre workout then it seemed to sort it self out,

but to be honest on reflection i should have sought help from a sport injury specialist.
