Great Interview with Ruan Pienaar Empty Great Interview with Ruan Pienaar

Brilliant interview with Ruan Pienaar in the Rugby Paper. He's an incredible role model; I feel he's the perfect rebuttal to people who think all players who move overseas only do it for the rugby.

http://www.therugbypaper.co.uk/features/columnists/brendan-gallagher/14520/brendan-gallagher-ruan-pienaar-keeps-faith-with-ulster/

Brendan Gallagher wrote:There might have been a more influential and committed ‘overseas’ signing than Ruan Pienaar in the last 18 seasons since rugby turned professional but I very much doubt it. Ulster’s Springbok World Cup winner arrived at Ravenhill in his absolute pomp three seasons ago – a rare occurrence in Britain and Ireland – and has played his heart out while contributing fully to Ulster’s off-the-field development.

This is the man who has so embraced Ulster – the team, the Province and the bloody weather – that just before Christmas he walked away from a Euro-laden three year contract offer from Toulon (2,899 hours of annual sunshine) to sign on for another three years in the comparative twilight of Belfast (1,290 hours on a good year although nobody can remember the last time that was).

Pienaar is hard core, loyal and inspirational and Ulster readily acknowledge they have struck lucky with the man from Bloemfontein. Signing up big names and hired hands is a fact of life in professional sport, but rugby took a long while to fully take that notion on board. Initially there was a strong suspicion that some of those concerned were seeking employment in Britain and Ireland as a last minute pension scheme although club treasurers argued they helped to put bums on seats. A fair few were genuine enough in their intentions but were the betrayed by creaking bodies and long term injuries. Very few were on the way up, most were on the way down.

The man has spent a very large amount of his time going around churches in Belfast and participating in Question and Answer sessions on rugby and christianity alike. Although he can command fees of hundreds or thousands of pounds to be booked as an after-dinner speaker, he will not accept any payment for these public appearances.

Excellent interview, and have to agree with geoff. The guy is just class in every respect. A massive benefit to Ulster.

Nice interview. I heard a good interview from Nigel Owens on homosexuality in sport today. I admire him a lot. Trailblazer might be a bit dramatic a tag to give him but he is brave but more importantly possibly really comfortable in his own skin which is a good example to set.

Its nice to see he is also able to have a laugh about himself. Couple of examples:

In a recent club match.

Scrumhalf: Hey that feed was straight!!!!!!!!!!
Owens: That was about as straight as me.

In the dressing room after a recent international:

Semi naked player: Should I put my shorts back on Nigel?
Owens: No you're not my type.
Teammates: applause and laughter.

Nice that he doesn't take himself too seriously though as he says banter means something different to everyone. One mans banter is another mans pain.

Listening to Neil Francis and Nigel Owens debating homosexuality in rugby now.

Ruan and Johann are gentlemen role models first and rugby gods second, pure class (and not the only ones on the squad).

My youth may be far behind me but surely I am allowed to have role models still ? Smile

Never forget first meeting Johann.

By the end I was like a dewy eyed star struck teenager prepared to follow him in storming the barricades (I was in my mid 50's at the time, and not afraid to admit it)

Some people just know how to deliver leadership

Sounds to me like a Dangerous South African cult growing in Belfast....  Not good news.  We'll have to factor in a de-programming....em... program for them afflicted boys in the next round table talks about the marching season.
