Who will be crowned champions of the Six Nations 2014?
Six Nations 2014
Plain and simple, it's the best time of the year. Who will win and why?

Haha, Will be an absolute cracker, I have mixed opinions but I believe apart from a shocker with Injuries there is some cause for optimism. i hope its not a flop like the kidney bean era.

The big game for Ireland i think is Wales. Have been very close games and theres a massive rivalry there. Its our second game in so if were two from two and playing well. I'd like to think we could win a championship. Dont think well get the slam though.

Fancied Ireland's chances before SOB got injured. We''l miss him massively.
England have Wales and Ireland at home, and hence I think they'll take the title this year. Possibly a Slam.

I've gone for Wales...no surprise there. I'm hoping they'll be buoyed by history in going for the treble (titles in a row). It won't be a Grand Slam though.

Re: Six Nations 2014
This year is too close to tell, so many permutations between the top 4 teams. If england beat france and scotland away to start we could well go on to win it, but we all know how much Ireland and Wales would love to upset that party at Twickers. Key game for me is the Ireland Wales game in the 2nd round. If wales can win that one then they should be unbeaten by the time they get to England and if they can win that you would back them to beat scotland. If Ireland beat Wales they will be confident against England the next weekend and if they have a slam or championship on the cards for the final game away in France, i wouldn't back against them winning that. And speaking of France, god knows what they will do. Strange selection for the England game and quite a few unknowns in their backline, plus Lions year as well.
I honestly have no idea who will take the 6N this year, I'd like it to be England and if we can beat the French (i think we will as we've done it the last 3 or 4 6N) and Scots away we stand a good chance. The Irish and the Welsh are never easy games for us, even at home and much of how those game pans out depends on how they get on against each other the week before.

I think Wales have to be favorites. I expect a few surprises this year. Scotland to beat one of France, England or Wales for example.
Either way I reckon it will be a cracker. Any of Ireland, France, England or Wales can win IMO.

I don't think there will be a slam this year with each team taking at least one loss.
I think England will win it and will narrowly beat an injury-ravaged Wales at HQ.

Re: Six Nations 2014
I think Wales have the edge over what will be a quite open 6Ns, mainly because they have consistency in their squad and have the experience of winning the championship.
I think Ireland have the players that are on form whether they are representing the provinces or playing for other clubs and could potentially be the Slammers.
Hope we get into the top three which will be seen as an improvement but not holding out too much....

I don't think there will be a grandslam this year. I think Ireland and Scotland will surprise us with some great performances.
I would love to see Wales win after two wins in two years and minimal injuries I think they are the measure that everyone else needs to level with.
I think they will just about win it. Not by a large margin.

People have been saying Ireland have the players for more than ten years but with no sign of that being turned into a tournament winning team.flyhalffactory wrote:I think Wales have the edge over what will be a quite open 6Ns, mainly because they have consistency in their squad and have the experience of winning the championship.

Ireland won a grand slam in '09? Was that not a sign?
Can you remember the last time England won a slam?

Of course Being English it as to be England.
But If Ireland play the same way in the 6ns like they did against NZ in the autum, then they could go close or maybe pull off a 6ns win. Grand Slam? I don't think so, not this year for any team.

Re: Six Nations 2014
I think if Ireland beat us then they are definitely favorites to be champions this year. Maybe even a grand slam.
I'm not convinces on England at the moment, there back line just looks like a bunch of descent clubs players who have been thrown together. Too many injuries and injured to a few of there forwards and there is no depth
It's hard to put a label on France because you don't know how it will turn out
Scotland are always under dogs and will be on the minds of every team i'm sure
I expect the following:
1. Ireland
2. Wales
3. England
4.Scotland
5. France
6. Italy
I mean it's hard to call at this moment in time but those are predictions. They will probably completely change after the first round. Maybe France will be amazing, maybe's England's new backline will surprise us all, maybe Italy will shock us in Cardiff and maybe Ireland will choke up again against Scotland. Time will tell but at this moment in time I think that will be the table.

there's a couple of side shows also, wales looking to win the tournament for a third time, and Ireland working with a new coach. Will the possibility of making six nations history inspire wales or will the weight of expectation from the supporters prove to be too much of a burden?history is hugely against wales or any other team achieving three in a row,if wales do succeed it will be a notable achievement, in Irelands case never underestimate the impact a new coach can bring, teams tend to raise their game under a new coaching structure.im going to wait until the first round of games are over before making a prediction but I will predict no slam this year.

Why?
I picked Scotland last year, and I want to pick a different team that is either a dark horse or an underdog.
france and Italy doesn't really come into my equation as I don't know any Italians or Frenchmen.

To add to that it's BODs last season and the lads will be desperate to win it for him, hence the performance against NZ because that was BODs last opportunity to play against and beat the All Blacks (heartbreaking stuff). To add to that England and Wales will be trying to get the jump on one and other before the RWC. France will have a point to prove with results not going their way and this whole Lions year business (however, I'm tipping England to win against them in the first game) and Scotland/ Italy will be looking to continue or improve on last years results, so a lot going on in this year tournament.

Underdog - check! - Lifetime experience
Dark Horse - check! - Yes, we do know quite a lot about horses.
Winner this year? I'm going to stick with my scientific predictor graph that has been in my filing cabinet since the end of last year's contest: England. Ireland 2nd.

Does anyone know the record for consecutive 6N wins? Has a team ever done three in a row or more?
England, Wales, Ireland and France have to be the frontrunners for me. Out of those I still think either England or Wales will take it and it will come down to that match to decide it. But I am happy to be corrected otherwise.

No side has ever won three '6' Nations in a row. In terms of the championship I think France won it 3 times in a row in the late '80s.kiakahaaotearoa wrote:Does anyone know the record for consecutive 6N wins? Has a team ever done three in a row or more?

Re: Six Nations 2014
France are woefully short of form, have lost Dussatoir and are otherwise in total disarray. It'll be a French Grand Slam then.
Unless
If, as Kiakaha says Scotland beat Ireland then have England at Murrayfield and win that...it's away to Italy which is winnable. Then France at Murrayfield either the French turn up and stuff us or they spend the afternoon gazing at passing clouds and discussing Hollande's domestic ménage. Then it's Cardiff for the Grand Slam. Or has the 6N madness started already?

Think the record is 8 or 9 on the trot. I remember Wales had 8 on the go from 2007-2009 though something tells me England and France hold the joint record with 9 apiece if I recall the stats correctly.

Sorry, only just realised you meant tournament wins. In the 6N it's two in a row (England 2000-2001; France 2006-2007 and Wales 2012-2013). There's hasn't yet been three in succession, hence the noise coming from Wales about breaking the record (and they'd frickin' better if that's what we sacrificed the autumn series for!)

Nope no one has ever done 3 in a row. Like Cyril I thought it had been done in the past, so checked and it hasn't. You can see 3 wins in a row, but that is back in the days when they shared titles and didn't have points diff to seperate. So they don't count.
There has been no one who has won 3 or more 6 Nations (or previous) in a row OUTRIGHT, ie. without a shared title.

You're quite right No9. I didn't realise one of them was a shared win for France. Seems strange that no side has ever held long-term dominance in the tournament. I guess that's one of the reasons it's so popular.

Good work no9.
Surprising that the draw home and away seems to stop teams from dominating for long periods. Even two in a row seems to be a rare thing.
