2014 MLS Superdraft
By Martin Whiteley.
One of the unique aspects of Major League Soccer is the draft that takes place every year to assign players who have graduated from college or otherwise signed for the league. This year there will be four rounds the first two taking place on January 16 at the Philadelphia Convention Center. Rounds three and four will take place on January 21. The way the draft works is on a worst to first process from the previous seasons standings and playoff results. If there is an expansion side that year they always get the first pick and if there is more than one new side a coin is flipped to decided the placings. Of course for people who follow other American sports drafts you will know it is never that straightforward as draft spots are sometimes offered to equal up trade deals. Below is the first round order as it stands now.
1 D.C. United
2 Philadelphia Union (From Chivas USA for a deal done on May 14 2013)
3 Vancouver Whitecaps FC (From Toronto FC for a deal done on July 20 2012)
4 Columbus Crew
5 FC Dallas
6 Philadelphia Union
7 Vancouver Whitecaps FC
8 Chicago Fire
9 San Jose Earthquakes
10 Montreal Impact
11 Colorado Rapids
12 New England Revolution
13 Seattle Sounders FC
14 Los Angeles Galaxy
15 Toronto FC (From New York Red Bulls for a deal done on December 13 2013)
16 Houston Dynamo
17 Portland Timbers
18 Real Salt Lake
19 New England Revolution (From Sporting Kansas City for a deal done on December 2012)
The same process is them repeated for Rounds 2,3 and 4.
A Special set of players in the Draft are the The 2014 Generation adidas class. Generation adidas players do not count against a MLS team's salary budget. Players who join MLS as part of the Generation adidas program receive educational grants to further their college education. The following are the players selected this year.
Defender Christian Dean from East Palo Alto, Calif. (College California)
Defender AJ Cochran -- St. Louis -- (Wisconsin)
Defender Damion Lowe -- Kingston, Jamaica -- (Hartford)
Goal-Keeper Andre Blake -- Mary Pen, Jamaica -- (Connecticut)
Midfielder Marlon Hairston -- Jackson, Miss -- (Louisville)
Defender Eric Miller -- Woodbury, Minn -- (Creighton)
Forward Ntokozo Tshuma -- Bulawayo, Zimbabwe -- (Maryland)
So who are some of the other players who will be hoping to make a name for themselves in future MLS campaigns.
Expected to go quite early is Christian Dean's team mate from the University of California Steve Birnbaum. Like Dean he is a Center-back and his ability may tempt a few side to try and do a deal with DC United so that they can get him with the number 1 pick.
Although still raw Cyle Larin could hear his name called sooner rather than later. A team-mate at the University of Connecticut of Andre Blake Larin is seen as a good option for a team looking slightly to the future and would be able to use him as an impact player early on whilst they polish up his rough edges to make him a more consistent performer.
Able to play either in midfield or up top as a striker Patrick Mullins has the versatility that some see as an advantage, or some see as a negative as nobody is sure what his best position is. Undoubtedly he is as talented as anyone in the draft as his performances at Maryland University as a team-mate of Ntokozo Tshuma proved. Some experts even had him as a potential overall first pick at one point.
So that tells you the basics of what could happen, we just now have to wait to find out what exactly does transpire.

Re: 2014 MLS Superdraft
I've never really understood the drafts in US sports. Do the players have any say in to where they go? Are all the players owned by the league rather than by individual clubs?
