Scotland rugby players face assault charge Empty Scotland rugby players face assault charge

Post by madmaccas Thu 14 Nov 2013, 6:40 pm

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-24945066

"Four Scottish international rugby players are expected to appear in court in Glasgow next month over an alleged serious assault, it has emerged.

The BBC understands the players involved are Ryan Grant, Sean Maitland, Ryan Wilson and Rory Hughes.

Grant and Maitland were both part of the British and Irish Lions tour this summer.

The charges relate to an incident in Glasgow's west end in October, when another man was injured.

Maitland and Grant are both in the Scotland squad that will play South Africa at Murrayfield on Sunday.

Wilson has played four times for the national team, while Hughes is a member of the Scotland Sevens squad.

All four players are contracted to Glasgow Warriors. "

Ugh I really hope this isn't as bad as it sounds! This rumour has been doing the rounds but BBC confirmation certainly has confirmed the fears. Anyone got any more info?

Careful what people say here folks.

It doesn't mention any charges so they could just be witnesses?

1 will be charged, 3 won't be from what I hear.

The 1 who may possibly be charged is the guy who had a possible scrap with a non pro / semi pro rugby player.

I heard it was the case of the non pro acting billy big mouth, and 1 pro putting him in his place.

Shouldn't land me in trouble...

Don't think many people will bat an eye-lid. Put 'Mike Phillips faces assault charge' in your heading and there will be absolute uproar.

When you guys say "serious assault" do you mean a weapon was involved or death has or might occur?

Worth remembering too, that these are still charges, not convictions.

Lesley Vainikolo was prosecuted for an assault charge after a fight outside a nightclub and found not guilty.

In Scotland, assault is a common law offence. In order to distinguish between serious and common assaults, police forces use a common definition of what a serious assault is.

An assault or attack in which the victim sustains injury resulting in detention in hospital as an inpatient, for the treatment of that injury, or any of the following injuries whether or not detained in hospital;

Fractures (the breaking or cracking of a bone. Note - nose is cartilage not bone, so a 'broken nose' should not be classified unless it meets one of the other criteria)
Internal injuries
Severe concussion
Loss of consciousness
Lacerations requiring sutures which may lead to impairment or disfigurement
Any other injury which may lead to impairment or disfigurement."

Please note that slight changes to the definition of serious assault were made in April 2011. Loss of consciousness is no longer included in the definition of what constitutes a serious assault.

I have heard the same from my source at Edinburgh rugby, one of the players is in serious trouble the other 3 were there and helped split
the situation up!

4 men have been charged, not 1 and three witnesses. There is CCTV evidence as described in various news updates. If you have ever been to the kebab shop in question you will know that there are many cameras which cover the whole area. If you have done something unsavoury it will have been captured.

Thanx Pat, thats like our summary offences assault and crimes act assault, weve never differentiated between assaults involving someone losing consciousness or not .

Next question: lets say a New Zealander for example was working in Scotland maybe playing a bit of rugby, and was convicted of assault, could he lose his working visa?

Yes, and it's happened before.

Nice to see the Scots showing a bit of fight for a change, it's a pity they didn't show more of it on the field! Whistle

Before there's an anti-Welsh backlash in response to the above post, I'd just like to point out that Shifty doesn't have full access to the internet and thus is unaware that Scotland didn't crumple when the Irish ran at them in the 6N.

He's also oblivious to Scotland's 'fighting spirit' against SH teams.....

Shifty if you replace the f in your name with another t you will get a pretty accurate description of not only your personality but also your intelligence level.
