Police called to city centre takeaway in early hours to reports woman was punched.

Liverpool professional boxer Derry Mathews has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting a woman outside a popular city centre takeaway.

The 30-year-old from the L14 area of Liverpool is awaiting questioning by detectives after a 25-year-old woman suffered facial injuries in Lemon and Lime in Dale Street.

Police officers were called to the takeaway at 4am today following reports that a female customer had been punched.

On arrival they found a 25-year-old with injuries to her eye.

It is believed that she was punched once in the face by a man following an argument between the victim and the attacker's female partner.

Police said the alleged attacker and his partner left the takeaway in a taxi before officers arrived.

The ECHO understands that five women attempted to stop the man from making his getaway.

The injured woman was taken to the Royal Liverpool Hospital to have her injuries assessed and treated.

Detectives have spoken to several witnesses who were inside the takeaway at the time and are viewing CCTV taken in and around Dale Street.

Mathews, a Commonwealth boxing champion, recently agreed a deal with Queensbury Promotions - and is due to fight on their big December show in Liverpool.

The Liverpool lightweight sealed a five-fight deal over an 18 month period which he hopes will culminate in a world title shot.

A police spokesman said: "A 30-year-old man from the L14 area of Liverpool has been arrested on suspicion of assault and remains in custody awaiting questioning by detectives."

Derry comes across as one of the good guys. A role model for domestic level fighters to aspire to. Hope that sake this isn't true.

Derry has a reputation for being a thug around own with his mates. No idea if its true, but got no reason to believe hes a role model either. anyone can be respectful when they know the cameras are on them

That was news to me, thanks for the intel.

You're right, media persona can be so misleading.

Thats the first I have heard of Derry being a thug.

He has his own gym and runs this when not in training, seems very fitness orientated and lives the life.

Also after CCTV evidence being reviewed he has been released without charge. So lets not be bandwagon jumpers....

This was my impression of him.

Being released without charge means that there's insufficient evidence AT THIS TIME. They tend to release people from their bail and then re-arrest on fresh evidence. Sometimes the CCTV is of such poor quality that it's impossible to establish the identity of the assailant beyond all reasonable doubt.

However, there's also the possibilty that it's a case of "six of one, half a dozen of the other" and you may have a scenario where a wily old officer has decided that it's not a crime to lose a fight you started and sent Derry on his way.

Derry ended up in court in 2010 for pulling up beside an ex-girlfriends car and verbally abusing her and her boyfriend including punching and kicking the ex's car.

I always thought it was derrys mum that was the thug.

The thread was on exciting fighters to watch, Matthews is rarely in a dull fight.

I've never been under the misapprehension that Derry is a good guy. He's a complete tool.
