PGA Tour: Overnight Sensation, By The Grace Of god?: Notes from the Ballwasher
1).The PGA Tour season is only two weeks' old and already we have our first overnight sensation - at least in the eyes of America's golfing press: Chesson Hadley, a lad with a really silly name and an apparent obligation to praise the lord at every opportunity. But his last year has seen more twists and turns than an alpine road full of hairpins.
2).First, let's look at the basics:
Born in Raleigh, North Carolina, grew up playing Junior Golf with Webb Simpson, among others.
Attended University golfing powerhouse, Georgia Tech, in Atlanta. (Mize, Cink, Kuchar, etc, etc.)
Qualified for web.com action via 2012 Q-School.
Won Rex Hospital Open on last season's web.com Tour and then won the WTF Championship.
Debuts on PGA Tour at 2013/2014 Frys Open.
3).But let's have a closer look at these past 13 months:
Rewind to Q-School Stage 1 in 2012.
After officially missing out on advancing from Stage 1 to Stage 2 by one shot, Hadley's Tour aspirations are over for the year. Until:
Blayne Barber realises that a one-stroke penalty he applied on himself for believing he disturbed a leaf on his backswing (even his caddie said he never saw movement) should have been a two-shot penalty. Normally this wouldn't have made any difference as Barber's score was well within the cut line for advancing to Stage 2.
Except that retrospective application of the penalty meant he had effectively signed for the wrong score and was disqualified. (Fred Ridley please note.)
4).Why does this matter?
Of the six golfers who moved up from T19 to T18, Chesson Hadley, church deacon and avid consumer of the right-wing Drudge Report was one - Walker Cup winner (holed the winning putt at RCD) and sometime E.T. player Jonathan Moore was another, Dutchmen Derksen and Lafeber were two others.
From that unpromising, then fortuitous start Hadley qualified via Stage 2 to Stage 3 and his web.com card.
5).And then:
After making steady progress up the web.com leaderboards he comes to the "Rex Hospital Open" in his hometown of Raleigh and wins the thing. Not just any old home win, but in the event sponsored for Rex Hospital . . . . . where he was born.
The rest is history - 3rd on the web.com moneylist was followed by his Tour Championship win and resultant high seeding for priority entry in to early season, pre-reshuffle events. And after two of them, and playing in Sunday's final group with fellow praisethelorder Simpson, he's already 25% of the way to a 2014/2015 Tour card.
Perhaps their god is the real thing after all?
Regardless, you just know the PGA Tour laps up stories like these.
6).Meanwhile, good news and bad news for Russell Knox:
Good news: Two respectable finishes at the Frys (26th) and Las Vegas (30th), despite stubbing his toe last Sunday. And now in decent position to improve his priority status at the turn-of-the-year reshuffling.
Bad news: At these two events in 2012 he finished 8th and 13th respectively.
With the Tour going to Asia, a rest may do young Russell good, and hopefully he'll improve on his 2012 27th position at the McGladreys and 30th place at Mayakoba. In which case, the new seasonal format will have worked out quite nicely for him.
7).Webb Simpson looked impressive in Las Vegas and it appears he'll celebrate at home rather than follow the circus to Kuala Lumpur and Shanghai - expect to see him return at the McGladreys where he threw away the chance to win in a 2011 play-off against Crane.
8).No strong feelings about tomorrow's "CIMB Classic"; there's a fair-to-middling field assembled the old-fashioned way, by appearance money.
Last year's last-place finisher Scott Hend took home $40K; with an enlarged (engorged sounds more appropriate) field from 48 to 78 golfers, there's no cut and everyone is guaranteed FedEx points or, for real stragglers, fractions thereof.
Not my favourite type of tournament but at least Messrs Davis, Laird and Lynn are aboard the gravy train - Davis and Laird have prospered in Malaysia in past years, and it's a shrewd move for David Lynn to play.
Other Europeans include Garcia, Blixt and Lingmerth.
9).The final "regular season" event on the Champions Tour starts Friday outside San Antonio.
Still in question entering this tournament is exemption for 2014. Top 30 moneywinners will be fully exempt, but Langer (1st) is the only European certain of his ticket. Positions 31 - 50 will have conditional status, which means last year's surprise package Roger Chapman is in a precarious spot at #46 and no recent form to speak of as he heads to Texas. Forsbrand has been on fire recently and is up to #52, while Barry Lane is 66th and Mouland 71st.
Montgomerie and Lyle are automatically exempt as WGHOF'ers which, given their play, is ridiculous. Lyle has scratched around with an apparently straight face for too long, and Monty seems to be on a year-long busman's holiday.
10).More from Nick Price regarding the Presidents Cup:
He told Global Golf Post that he'd love to captain the Internationals again but would be reluctant to do so under the present format. In particular he wants to change the number of "Points" to be contested from 34 to 28, a la Ryder Cup - it's not hiding players, he says, it's about putting our leading players forward.
He also has a bit of a dig:
"Nobody wants to sit out here. It's like American sport, 'Everyone tried hard so let's give everyone a trophy.' That's not what sport is about."
What he's really doing is to challenge Finchem's concept of organizing a competition, choosing the Captains and Teams, setting the Rules, picking the venues and setting the ground rules too.

When he holes a putt he raises his right hand as if to acknowledge rapturous applause, and twists his wrist with a couple of digits stuck out. Not sure how fellow competitors like it, but can imagine it would p1ss a good few off.

No US Pros are criticized for the way they raise their putter after making a putt.
I guess if he had a name like Tyrell Hatton, or Florentyna Parker or Felicity Johnson, names would not be considered "silly".
What did Slick Willy Shakespeare say about a name? Something about smelling as sweet?

Glad I wrote this; plenty of Felicitys around of course and even a few Florentiynas (perhaps I was wrong all along, Sr, and it was the Florentinyna's rum cake I adored?), and assume that Mr.Hatton and Mr.Button were both motorheads.
Perhaps there's a good reason to call one's child Chesson; after all I was tempted to give my son a second name of Fratton until saner minds intervened and we chose John instead.
Meanwhile I'll assume it's something from the bible or a tea party idol.
Good golfer though, and could well become the force on the PGA Tour I suggested he might a few threads ago.
Looks like Stenson is a go . . . .

Most of these golfers could be in Life of Brian, simply due to their name, or variations hereof. Felicity Lovemark III could easily be Incontinentia Buttock's lesbian mistress.

Not sure how Luke Guthrie ended up playing the BMW Master this week, but he is leading that tournament early in the first round.
Limited field at the BMW and Luke Guthrie gets an invite?
If I was EuroTour Member and didn't get into the BMW Masters, I would be mighty ticked off.

Deviating slightly to putting celebrations. Saw a mate on our 18th stroke a putt and give it the old "putter in the air walk after" treatment before it sailed by and we got to witness (and definitely not crease up laughing at all, no, not one bit) the sight of transition from pompous march towards glory through the mid-roll crumple to the classic man on his knees with head in hands as he knows he's just made a right knob of himself.
Needless to say...
Missed the one back too.

Loved when Skeletor did "the charge" after a putt looked in in the Ryder Cup v Garcia and it ended up short.
The look on his face was priceless.

GPB,
Luke Guthrie was in due to his owgr Top 100 ranking.
Great play from the Americans in Shanghai, and pretty good by Ryan Moore in KL. Good from Sergio also, plus signs of life from Martin Laird.
Some big numbers poosted at both events though.
Edit: Anyone know why Luiten withdrew? Ominious sign for a European golfer at this time of year.

Luiten has a shoulder injury and withdrew after his tee shot. He only hit it 120 according to his playing partner Luke Donald's Twitter. Think Luiten withdrew as with this new Race to Dubai format, players have to play 2 out of 3 events before Dubai, to be able to play in Dubai. Luiten teeing off counts as playing in the tournament. Bit of a farce really.kwinigolfer wrote:GPB,

On a side note I see Garcia isn't in the field for Turkey so guessing he wont be playing in Dubai then as the only tournament hes playing in is HSBC. Bit surprising that, when he's around the top ten in the standings.

Yeah and something about Schwartzel not eligible for R2D as well? Can someone explain the must play 3 rule. What exactly do they lose... can they still play but for reduced something or not bonus... or how does it work.Sand wrote:On a side note I see Garcia isn't in the field for Turkey so guessing he wont be playing in Dubai then as the only tournament hes playing in is HSBC. Meanwhile, a decent field has been assembled for next month's McGladrey Classic:
Zach Johnson, DLIII, Simpson, Kuchar, plus most of the Tour's Carolina boys (except, so far at least, Bill Haas).
Davis, Pettersson, Clarke, Freddie Jac, Knox.
PS: Wouldn't it be nice if the European Tour applied its handcuffs to events that are actually staged in Europe. Difficult to get too excited about the "No fixed abode Tour".

Amazing start by Daly in China. I'm guessing he's got 6 - 10 more holes until he goes "Sergio" on us.

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Sr's been eating too much of the Florentyna Shop's rum cake again.
Good article here from Rex Hoggard on the E.T. contortions:
http://www.golfchannel.com/news/rex-hoggard/european-tour-race-to-dubai-changes-cause-concern/
(Easy for Schwartzel's schedule to be cited, but no-one forced him to turn up in a tin-pot tournament in China two weeks ago.)
Stupid set-up though, as if O'Grady's swapped jobs with Sepp Blatter for a couple of weeks.

Nothing but Green Mountain coffee Kwin ... but, you watch, look for Daly to put up that big hole number like Sergio did in those key situations last year.

You sound like Brian Williams . . . . . . . . .
GPB,
I wasn't trying to justify it, just explaining. Having said that, the CIMB jolly restricts player participation with more fully exempt PGA Tour members than tournament places. The rich get richer.

Kwin - Really don't understand your confusion on this issue ... Daly, like Sergio, prone to self destruction (although Daly both on and off the golf course).
Hope he proves me wrong, but would not count on it!

This is an administration issue and all of the blame is on O'Grady's (and his staff) back.kwinigolfer wrote:???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Sr,
Just confused/sadlysurprised about your anti-Sergio rhetoric.
Just think how good a season Sergio would have enjoyed if not for the occasional aberration. Would have ruined your year.
GPB,
Some of your responses are as clear as mud. I was criticising the E.T. administration, not endorsing it.

Just saw the article detailing Luiten's WD.
The Race to Dubai should be called the Steeplechase to Dubai.
The players have to Jump through Hoops and Hurdles in order to get to Dubai.

Enough of the Grand National.
There are wheelbarrows full of cash available during the next few weeks and gobs of owgr points. Hopefully they won't all go to the owgr Top Fifty and some outsiders will muscle their way into qualification for The Masters, Open Championship and some WGC's.
This is what's at stake for the pros between now and year's end, calendar year that is, as per pgatour.com:
A Billy Payne invitation for those not already exempt will go to:
~OWGR Top Fifty as at Dec 31st. (Colsaerts, Hanson, Gonzo, Harrington, Lynn, Molinari among those not already exempt and outside the Top 40).
Tickets to Hoylake go to:
~Top 30 Race to Dubai as at Nov 17th.
~2013 Aussie Tour money leader as at Dec 1st.
~2013 Japan Tour money leader as at Dec 8th.
~2013 Sunshine Tour money leader as at Dec 15th.
WGC: HSBC Champions:
~BMW Masters winner, but CIMB Champ not listed. Can't imagine why not.
WGC Cadillac:
~Race to Dubai Top 20 Nov 17th.
~Top two on:
Aussie order of merit: Dec 1st
Japan money: Dec 8th
Sunshine: Dec 15th.
WGC Bridgestone:
~Winner of Bridgestone Open (Oct 27th).
~Winner of Aussie PGA (Nov 10th)
~Winner of Thailand Open (Dec 15th)
. . . . plus winners of elite tournaments.

Kwin - As I was/am always surprised at your "discounting" any American who wins a WGC event??? Or, your never ending, Timmy's fault/American economy that brought down the European tour.

Not just Kwini, but most of the Euro Fan boys. They blame Finchem for acting in the best interest of the PGATour, instead of the EuroT.Shotrock wrote:Kwin - As I was/am always surprised at your "discounting" any American who wins a WGC event??? But I find very ironic, if not hypocritical,of the lack of outrage on this site about the debacle at the BMW Masters. Luiten WD's after one tee shot. A de facto required tournament for the Race to Dubai and there are players like Guthrie and Daly in the field. and a bunch of Chinese players ranked the same as me in the OWGR.
For the record, I can understand the need to expose Chinese players in a tournament in China, but not when that tournament has a limited field, and semi-required by the Euro Tour.
George O'Grady needs to consult his right hand man Chubby and fix it before the schedule is announced for next year. This is a farce.

Mac,
Yes, of course.
Not sure what Sr is on about. Don't think I ever discount an American who wins a WGC, especially those who win WGC's outside the States, like Woods has done.
And I always acknowledge the brilliant job Finchem does for the PGA Tour. It's not in his interest to promote the E.T. and what's wrong in pointing out when he does things that are likely to undermine the E.T.? I always acknowledge it's O'Grady's fault for being a complicit patsy. And can't ever recall anyone on here blaming the US economy for the plight of the E.T. Good lord. Although some irony has certainly been noted.
Anything complimentary said about anything US is immediately riposted with inferences that one should be even more complimentary and unctuous. That's not the way it works. Too much moonshine being drunk.
As for the E.T. outside Europe, and its incessant mis-steps, perhaps GPB doesn't know who Sepp Blatter is. Or doesn't understand "stupid". Don't think anyone finds the Luiten thing anything other than absurd. Reminiscent of Stenson's fiasco a few years ago which we certainly mentioned.
Just to compound your outrage at Guthrie and Daly teeing it up in Shanghai, there's a bloke called Woods signed up to do the Turkey trot in a fortnight.
But GPB is spot on when he says the thinking behind this part of the E.T. schedule can be a farce. It is. Chubby also upset, though, so don't blame him.

Leaderboard bunched halfway thru Round 2, with Moore, Keegs and Sergio all treading water, while others are making birdies for fun - Baddeley for one, not playing badly for a nice change.

Does finchem necessarily do a good job?
He has put together a tour where the players make more money than those on other tours, but surely there are a few other criteria.
For all we know a more symbiotic relationship with the Euro tour could have brought any number of benefits for the game as a whole.
You would have to take a pretty limited perspective to be certain finchem does the best job for golf beyond some simple capitalist measures.

Probably the penultimate thing on my mind at that time in the mornings is golf. The last being posting on a golf forum. Hey ho - inspiration or motivation is a funny old thing.
Although, the golf course is a wonderful thing at that time for a wander if you are up for whatever reason. So peaceful and the least light pollution around my area so views of the night sky are as good as they're going to be.

Mac,
Think I said he does a good job for the PGA Tour, and I'm sure that's true.
Sometimes it seems as if that is like saying Ted Cruz does a good job for the Tea Party - but no doubt that the Tour is healthier than ever and provides untold riches for its members.
And no doubt he'll be thrilled to see Keegan Bradley out front in Malaysia - can he become the second anchorer to win in consecutive weeks after only Adam Scott (and Martin Laird if you count him) won anchoring last season?
Maybe even thrilleder to see Luke Guthrie cleaning up so far in China.

Kwini, that is exactly the point I was trying to make and dont at all feel like anyone should feel obliged to state finchem does a good job. Recently on here it seems that the excepted story is that finchem does a good job.
I am not so sure, and if you have similar doubts then I am on the same page as you. Actually really like your tea party analogy.
