BOXING'S answer to 'goal-line' technology will be used when St. Helens' Martin Murray challenges Sergio Martinez for the WBC middleweight title in Buenos Aires on April 27.

'Instant Replay' from HBO footage will be used in the event of any controversies over cuts and fouls to ensure fair play.



WBC Secretary General Mauricio Sulaiman said: "Boxing needs to step into the 21st century and use the technology that we have available to us, to make sure that justice prevails in this sport.

"Justice is not served in our sport when fouls or accidental actions occur, creating unjust results."

If it proves successful in the fight being televised live on BoxNation, 'Instant Replay' could eventually be used in all major title fights.

There are already calls for a system to be in place during football matches.



"I will never forget when everyone criticized Don Jose Sulaiman, President of the WBC, when he changed the distance of world championship fights from 15 rounds to 12 rounds.

"Now, every major sanctioning body follows that same rule for championship bouts.

"Hopefully for the good of boxing, everyone will follow him and use instant replay to avoid any more controversies in our beloved sport," said Sampson Lewkowicz, longtime advisor of Martinez.

Weird or Wonderful?

Weird, if a ref can't see what is happening when his standing a foot away he should be sacked. It makes sense on a rugby pitch, even a football pitch. Not in a ring, this isn't wresseling, the ref isn't being turned, while the corner smash th other guy with a chair. Ridiculous.

That's not really true Jim, occassionally guys liek HOpkins are genius' at conning the ref and it makes certain decisions very difficult to make without the aid of instant replay.

Great idea, other sports really need to follow.

I know Alex, but I don't see it as a massive problem needing to be solved. And have a feeling the medicine could end up being worse than the disease.

You could well be right there Jim and to be fair, it is pretty rare the ref gets it wrong, but every now and then a clash of heads causes the cut, and a punch causes the cut and the ref does get it wrong.

Bit iffy about it myself, I want to see the rules defined before its Yea or Nay

It's hard track every punch so it can be hard to see if it was the clash of heads or the punch that caused it

During the 60 second interval between rounds the commentators get to see things like what caused the cut, if a punch put them down or a push (Braldey vs Provodnikov round 1) , if a punch was low (e.g, Judah-Khan) or if a glove touched down (like Guerrero vs Kats for example). Shouldn't be hae dto implement the system and can only help
