Salt - the end? Empty Salt - the end?

Post by LivinginItaly Tue Mar 29, 2011 6:02 pm

I have just bought the directors cut of Salt on DVD (just came out in Italy this week), and have finally watched the film for the first time. Was a good film with many plot twists ( even if they were quite predictable). However, what a terrible ending. It just seemed to stop mid-film, with no conclusion. Have noticed this type of ending is becoming more prevalent with the producers wanting to leave open the possibility for a sequel, but this ending really was bad.

Compare it to the ending of Inception, where we have a conclusion to the plot of the film, but are left wondering if the conclusion was real or part of a dream. Whereas in Salt there is no attempt to draw a conclusion to the plot. It felt like I was watching the film on ITV in the good old days where they used to stop the film halfway through for a 30 minute news programme. The film ending was that abrupt, it felt like I was waiting for the second part to start.

What did you think of it the film, and in particular the ending?

I can't agree more Living.

I watched the movie and was enjoying it. The action was good and the twists were okay, but as you mentioned, predictable.

The ending was shocking. There is no doubt that there will be a Salt 2. There has to be, otherwise that ending makes absolutely NO sense. If there is a Salt 2, I don't know if I will want to watch it. Mainly due to the ending.

I prefer movies with a definite ending that they then open another chapter, if you will, in any sequals that are made.

Havent seen the film but I remember reading that the original story was written for a man (I think Cruise was lined up to play the lead at one point).

Could this have something to do with the poor ending?

No. It would have been terrible either way.

Don't think the gender of the lead would have changed it at all.

Interesting point though. Jolie is really quite good in it.

Agree with David, Jolie was very good in the movie, and don't think a male character would have significantly changed the ending

I find that Coen Brothers' films are similar in that sense. The ending to No Country for Old Men really irritated me.

Also, even though it was more accurate to the book, the ending of their new True Grit film annoyed me. It was so quick and left me very unsatisfied.

I found that the Blair Witch Project ended very quickly as well (although I thought the ending was good).

nothing happened for 80 minutes, then a 5 minute chase and....."Fin"
