You have a last week - you will be given precisely the equipment you need and the best guiding assistance available (should you want either). Where are you going to go, and what are you going to fish for?

I think it would be Alaska for wilderness and variety - fly fishing for pacific salmon, steelhead, trout, and even the odd pike in amazing scenery and terrific wildlife with that handy combination of decentish infrastructure but not too many people.

But then New Zealand might be great, and what about going somewhere I'm familiar with for the memories?

Tough, isn't it?

Canada for the salmon fishing would be incredible, so that'd certainly be on the list. Alaska would be similar, I imagine.

Your last paragraph sums it up. I'd be very stuck as to whether to go to a little old Welsh river that I enjoy so much, or whether to go for the more exotic option. Can I do both? Cool

No, and nor is this the same question as to where you'd like to fish for the rest of your days. It's the last week fishing you'll have.

Fishing in Mongolia for Taipon (spelling?) incredibly impressive fish, and endangered, so catching one would be a real treat in amongst spectacular scenery and a real sense of wilderness.

Taimen - I thought about that, but I think you have to heave out a sort of hedgehog festooned with hooks on a railway sleeper of a fly rod and I don't think I'd enjoy that sort of fishing so much. I also understand that the fish pretty much have lies in the river so that you catch and put back a 'known fish' that has been fished for in the same place by others all season, which strikes me as oddly artificial (at least if you catch a stocked fish and kill it you know that it hasn't been caught before).

I prefer fishing to have more connection with what I do here at home to give it some context rather than such novelty value - but maybe I don't know what I'm talking about re Taimen.

Ah but I wouldn't want a guide, Barry. I'd want the thrill of the chase.

Also not a fan of great big rods with boat rope for line, takes away the sporting element.

Just had a look at a Taimen video, and the tackle looks like it's pretty much the sort of stuff you'd use for fly fishing for Pike here, with similar tactics for Pike or Sea Trout, so not so bad at all.

Guides can be very nice if you have limited time.

Nice one, I plan to travel to Mongolia at some point within the next few years, so if I have time I might have a bash. Expect a full report, should I do so.

Am I right in thinking they actually feed whilst in the river in Canada?

Makes them much more elusive here, given that they don't actively feed whilst in the rivers.

Really? Those ones which crowd out the river and then turn red and green with big humps before dying (I can't remember what type) surely only breed in the river because there's way too many of them to feed there.

Isn't the basic pattern eating at sea breeding in the River, or is that for some types but not others?

Just some types, Barry. I know that some definitely do feed in the river, I forget which type, though.

It would have to be a week on the Kennet during duffers fortnight for me. Failing that, a couple of days upstream worming on the Honndu, just to re-live my youth.

Falkland Islands for the monster sea trout is a dream of mine, best fish to catch on a fly rod in my opinion. Although I heard steelhead are good too!

Rainbow trout in Chile would be nice too.

I would have loved to have fished Loch Maree before the salmon farming industry desolated the sea trout and salmon stocks on the west coast of Scotland.

What about those people who live on stilt houses and spend most of their time in the sea?? I imagine catching fish and learning with them would be amazing
